SOURCE-BASED OCCUPATION GUIDE

Software developer

A software developer researches, designs, builds, and improves computer programs that respond to people’s or organizations’ needs. The role involves interpreting requirements, judging whether a solution is feasible, and considering code, tests, and technical explanations together. Developers modify existing software to fix errors, adapt it to new hardware, or improve performance. The work also depends on sharing technical decisions clearly with teammates.

Visible and less visible activities

  • 01

Analyzes user needs and software requirements, then evaluates whether a design is feasible within time, resource, and technical constraints.

  • 02

Collaborates with analysts, engineers, and programmers to clarify system limits, interfaces, project capabilities, and performance expectations.

  • 03

Tests software or guides testing and validation; fixes errors, updates documentation, and improves the performance of existing applications.

Preparation and education to investigate

O*NET and the BLS describe this role through technical knowledge, requirements analysis, programming, testing, and teamwork. BLS’s identification of a bachelor’s degree as typical entry education reflects a U.S. pattern; it is not a mandatory or universal requirement in Turkey. Small projects, readable code, and explaining design choices strengthen preparation.

A small experiment

Design a small school-task tracker with three features: add a task, mark it complete, and warn when the list is empty. First write the expected behavior, then build it in a simple programming environment. Run at least three tests and record one bug, its cause, and your fix.

Questions to ask a professional

  1. What questions would you ask to clarify a user’s need?
  2. Which cases and failures would you check when testing a software change?
  3. How would you explain your decision when evaluating a different solution suggested by a teammate?
